FAQ: Clinically Normal Lactating Cows for Interstate Movement Testing Cattle for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI)

Per Federal Order, negative Influenza A virus PCR results from a NAHLN laboratory is required 7 days prior to movement. WADDL is a NAHLN laboratory and will ensure result turnaround time within 3 days of the lab receiving the samples.

How to submit for bovine HPAI testing:

  • Call WADDL at 509-335-9696, to notify them that healthy bovine HPAI samples will be submitted for interstate movement testing.

Collection:

  • Veterinarian is required to sample cows for Interstate Movement Testing.
  • Collect composite milk samples (all 4 quarters) from each animal

DO NOT POOL FROM DIFFERENT COWS

  • Collect 5-10mL of milk total per animal.
    • Use mastitis tubes that the dairy farm has on hand, preferably with a screw cap tops

OR

  • Call/email the laboratory for sampling tubes to be delivered at the cost of the client

DO NOT PARAFILM OR TAPE LIDS

  • Double bag tubes with absorbent material and tightly pack samples in insulated shipping container. Ship overnight with cold packs. Place a copy of the submission form inside the box in a Ziplock bag. 

Submission & shipping to WADDL:

Cost of testing:

  • USDA will be covering the cost of the PCR tests.
  • Client will be responsible for cost of shipping samples to WADDL
