The Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) offers a full range of testing and consultation services for sheep to ensure the health of your herd. Learn about the tests we offer, how to collect and submit samples, and how to easily and quickly view test results in our online client portal.

We have a dedicated and knowledgeable staff headed by Dr. Claire Burbick that is always willing to assist you with your testing needs.

Our tests can help you with:

  • herd health monitoring
  • pregnancy status
  • determining cause of abortions
  • diagnosing sick animals
  • maintaining biosecurity
  • parasitology testing
  • optimizing disease prevention strategies
  • interstate and international transportation requirements
  • show and sale entry requirements

What tests do I need?

We encourage you to work with your local veterinarian to determine specific testing needs. Tests can be ordered individually or as a panel. Additional tests can be added to any panel.

To assist in determining what would be the most appropriate tests to run on your animals, please contact the consulting microbiologist at 509-335-9696.

General herd health

We offer the Small Ruminant Biosecurity Serologic Panel, which includes:

  • Ovine progressive pneumonia (OPP), a small ruminant lentivirus
  • Caseous lymphadenitis (CL)
  • Johne’s disease (Mycobacterium paratuberculosis)

Other tests

  • Pregnancy testing
  • Caseous Lymphadentitis (CL) culture for the isolation and identification of the agent that causes CL.  If consuming or selling raw milk from your sheep or goats we recommend that you consult your state’s department of agriculture or state veterinarian for current testing requirements.
  • Barber’s pole worm. We offer fecal floats for the detection of gastrointestinal parasites and Haemonchus contortus with our Haemonchus contortus fluorescent assay.

New parasitology test for Barber’s pole worm

Laura

We have a new parasitology test for Barber’s pole worm.  We offer fecal floats for the detection of gastrointestinal parasites and Haemonchus contortus. Regular parasitology testing is important for monitoring individual animal health as well as herd health.

Dr. Laura Williams is one of fewer than 50 veterinarians in the United States board certified in parasitology by the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (ACVM) and the only one in Washington.

WADDL’s Serology section runs more than 80 available tests. If submitting online, you will get an estimated cost for the case. To view pricing visit our Test & Fees page.
